Winners of the Student Conference Support Award Announced.

The ASTSS Management Committee are pleased to announce that Selma Music and Erin Brown are the recipients of the ASTSS Student Conference Support Awards for 2016 to attend the 2016 ACOTS Conference (September 8-10) on the Gold Coast. 

The Student Conference Support Award was decided by a small independent subcommittee who reviewed all applicants.

Response to Orlando from the ASTSS

We at ASTSS are deeply saddened by the recent mass shooting on June 12, 2016 at Pulse, a gay nightclub in Orlando, Florida. Patrons in the nightclub were predominantly from the LGBTIQ community who were enjoying a Latin themed night out during Pride week. In a premeditated attack, a lone gunman opened fire with a semi-automatic weapon killing 49 people and wounding 53 others.

Over 1 million people arrived in Europe by sea in 2015. And since the conflict in Syria continues, this influx will not halt.

It is the biggest refugee crisis since World War II according to the UNHCR. The journey by sea is dangerous, the circumstances in refugee camps and asylum seeker centers are far from ideal – to say the least – and tensions between host countries make it difficult to find constructive solutions.
