The Management Committee and members of the Australasian Society for Traumatic Stress
Studies express our deep sadness and convey our sympathy and support for the survivors,
their families, and all persons affected by disasters that have occurred throughout the world.
It seems that an inordinate number of disasters, both natural (tsunamis, hurricanes, floods,
earthquakes, mudslides) and man made (terrorist attacks) have occurred in recent times.
The sudden and devastating nature of both natural and man made disasters make it
likely that many people directly involved will have some type of psychological reaction.
Such events may also revive the distress for those who have experienced similar events in
their past. For many, these reactions will pass in time, especially with the help and support
from family and friends. Others may find they need help and assistance in the longer term from
qualified health professionals. Your general practitioner or community health centre, as well as
the ASTSS website, will be able to provide information and advice on where to seek appropriate
health care assistance.
