As outlined in the Australian Guidelines for the Treatment of Adults with Acute Stress Disorder and Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (and see below), immediate and mandatory 'debriefings' are contra-indicated for trauma victims. However, requested emotional support should not be denied, and should be framed within the greater context. Many thousands of people have registered with the Red Cross who have lost their homes in the firestorm. Immediate help for trauma victims is best couched in practical and social support mechanisms.

For those emotionally affected by the firestorms we recommend:

  • Finding a place of perceived safety;
  • Obtaining up-to-date information & help where needed (see below);
  • Accessing usual social and community supports (where available);
  • Accessing practical support through government and charitable organisations;
  • Maintaining healthy eating & sleep;
  • Accessing medical support as needed;
  • Accessing psychological help if still having problems after 2 weeks.

Longer term emotional help can be accessed through the Better Access to Mental Health Care Initiative.

For those providing emotional support services we recommend:

  • Monitoring mental state and stabilising if required;
  • Encouraging re-engagement in routines and use of community and social supports;
  • Ensuring basic needs are met (e.g., housing, safety);
  • Reviewing in 2 weeks;
  • If problems persist, refer to practitioner who will use evidence-based treatment for depression, anxiety and trauma.

Psychological First Aid is the current model being trialled in helping people with immediate instrumental assistance and emotional support. Still being developed throughout the world (to replace the old, debriefing models) a practitioner handbook is available from the US National Centre For PTSD. This manual is available for download.
